Net Improved Brains?

Some research from a UCLA neuro-scientist, Gary Small,  has been reported in an article on Reuters titled “Is surfing the internet altering your brain?”  that

“The Internet is not just changing the way people live but altering the way our brains work … this is an evolutionary change which will put the tech-savvy at the top of the new social order.”

So being a web geek is going to put me amongst the new social order…nice.

The article does however note the flip-side.

The research notes a rise in people suffering Attention Deficit Disorder, the rise of internet addiction, and a decline in peoples human to human non-virtual communiciation skills.

“We’re seeing an evolutionary change. The people in the next generation who are really going to have the edge are the ones who master the technological skills and also face-to-face skills,”

So keep surfing people but make sure you spend some time away from the screen talking  to your friends and co-workers!

(You can read more findings from the research here, and Dr. Small is releasing a new book about this research soon)
